MEN'S GOLF TEAM TO CLOSE FALL SEASON IN SOUTH CAROLINA TOURNEY
RICHMOND, Ky. - Following a disappointing 14th place finish in the University of Louisville Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course earlier this week, coach Pat Stephens' Eastern Kentucky University men's golf team is preparing for the First South Intercollegiate Tournament at Florence, SC, Nov. 1-2.
Teams participating in this 54-hole tourney which will close EKU's fall season are Austin Peay, The Citadel, East Carolina, Frances Marion, George Mason, Georgetown, Georgia College, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Liberty, Seton Hall, South Carolina-Aiken and William and Mary.
At the U of L Intercollegiate, Eastern dug a hole for itself after the first round that it could not recover from after shooting an opening round 314 as a team and falling 20 strokes out of the lead. EKU did rebound, somewhat, in the second round, shooting a 306 to notch its 14th-place spot, some 27 strokes off the pace of eventual champion Notre Dame.
"Golf, sometimes, is a hard sport to figure out, but one of our downfalls in this tournament was the fact that we didn't drive off the tee particularly well," Stephens said. "Hopefully, we can regroup in the next week and a half and have a good tournament to close the fall season down in South Carolina."
Sophomore Brad Morris and senior Eric Willenbrink tied for 38th spot in the tourney to lead the Eastern contingent with their rounds of 154. Three strokes back for EKU was junior Jim Milam at 157, while Len Ashby, a freshman playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot a 158. Senior Brandon Tucker rounded out Eastern scores with a 160.
